David Alfaro Siqueiros "Maternidad"

Siqueiros was born on the 29th of December in 1896 in Mexico City. He went to college in Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. He also participated actively in Mexican Revolution as part of the Mexican army.

The mural was made between 1971 and 1973 with the length of 8 meters for 5 of height, the weight is one ton.

I chose this mural because it portraits one part of los hijos de la malinche lecture which I quite enjoyed.

In the mural we can observe that, a mother in pain with her child on her arms, and behind, as always, a man, in this case a campesino. And again, Paz makes the same question

The symbol of the motherhood was used by Siqueiros to represent femininity in a patriarcal culture, which I relate to the fact that la madre violada por la fuerza that Octavio talks about is this, la fuerza del patriarcado.

Another argument that one can use of why does Siqueiros give such importance to motherhood is because of the Catholicism that lives in Mexico.

For us, the virgen de Guadalupe means comfort and a figure to rely on, unlike la chingada that can be represented as la Malinche a symbol of the conquista from the Spanish.
